T-Mk 6 Fanfare

T-Mk 6 Fanfare noisemaker is a towed sonar decoy that is towed behind a surface ship to decoy acoustic homing torpedoes. The Fanfare system was mounted on the fantail and consisted of a winch with two drums in which hundreds of feet of cable were spooled for the attached noisemakers.

The two noisemakers were streamlined to reduce turbulence and were fitted with fins to stabilize them in the water.   They employ the means to produce signals that produce a greater noise than the ship; thereby diverting the incoming torpedo from the ship to the noisemaker.  Typically, the noisemakers emit sounds within the same frequencies of the ship's propellers.  They may be used in pairs or singularly.
